One of the first indicators is the sound of night noises and heavy footfalls. Unlike smaller critters, raccoons are large enough that you’ll hear slow, deliberate thumps and chittering in your attic, soffits, or crawl spaces, most often after dusk.
Another telltale sign is the presence of latrine sites, since raccoons defecate in the same dedicated spots. You may find piles of dark droppings on flat surfaces such as attic decking, shed roofs, or garage rafters. This is more than just a mess—it’s a serious public-health concern because raccoon roundworm eggs can become airborne if disturbed. Cleanup requires professional handling, as sweeping or vacuuming can make the problem worse.
